Migration to SAP S/4HANA in day-to-day operations
The migration to SAP S/4HANA is a complex and highly complex project. Thisapplies to the technical implementation, to the often large number of usersas well as to budget and time planning. Every changeover must take place inparallel with ongoing operations - and without becoming a burden on day-
to-day business. To ensure that the changeover runs as smoothly as possible, some aspects should be given special attention.
Companies should not calculate time and budget too tightly. Sinceunforeseen events or errors can always occur in such a complex project, acertain time and financial buffer is required. The responsible persons shouldalso be aware that such a project - for example in companies with differentERP systems in several regions - must be well prepared with regard to thescheduling of all participants and users.
It is also advisable to conduct a comprehensive test phase before the "go-live". Ideally, all later user groups should already be involved in these tests andall later applications and processes should be played through.
The help of external consultants can also prove helpful. They can supportcompanies in many ways: by optimizing or transforming existing businessprocesses, but also by introducing new business models. Good consultantscombine IT expertise with business know-how, have industry knowledge andexperience from other transformation and migration projects.
The project leader should always be an expert and manager. Strength inleadership and communication, assertiveness and professional know-how arejust some of the qualities that this person should possess. Unclearresponsibilities, a lack of trust in management on the part of those involved orcommunication problems can otherwise quickly prove to be a stumblingblock for the entire process.
Last but not least: the hardware. If a company wants to implement an on-premise solution (i.e. operate SAP S/4HANA on its own server), it mustinvestigate at an early stage whether its own IT infrastructure is also designedfor this route. Not every server on which the previous ERP software is stillrunning is also suitable for SAP S/4HANA. Adjustments and investments may stillbe necessary.
