What is SAP DM?

With SAP DM (SAP Digital Manufacturing), companies control and monitor their production in real time. They also gain new insights to optimise their production processes.

SAP DM is also an important component for the digitalisation and automation of production (smart factory).

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) is a modern, cloud-based manufacturing execution system (MES).

• SAP DM is provided by SAP as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).
• It is operated on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

The core task of SAP DM is the control of manufacturing processes. In this context, SAP also refers to it as Manufacturing Operations Management, or MOM for short.

SAP DM also supports companies in monitoring, analysing and integrating manufacturing processes.

It also forms the technological basis for the realisation of a smart factory - an intelligent factory with a high degree of self-sufficiency and automation.

In 2023, SAP changed the name of its solution portfolio: SAP DMC (SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud) became SAP DM (SAP Digital Manufacturing).

Technically, this did not change much for customers. This is because the predecessor was already an MES from the cloud with innovative functions for controlling production processes in the context of Industry 4.0.

In fact, the name change once again emphasises SAP's strategic focus on cloud solutions: it is clear that the cloud is now so self-evident from SAP's perspective that it no longer needs to be explicitly mentioned in the product name. SAP has simply dropped the "C" in DMC.

SAP Digital Manufacturing (SAP DM) and SAP Manufacturing Execution (SAP ME) are both MES solutions for digital production control.

The main difference is that SAP DM is a cloud solution

In addition, ME focuses more on operational production control, while DM also provides innovative features such as real-time monitoring and analyses.

SAP DM has three important core tasks: the control and management of production processes in real time, the in-depth analysis of production data and the optimisation of the use of resources in production. The MES solution provides the following main components for this purpose:

• SAP Resource Orchestration (SAP REO)

SAP Digital Manufacturing Execution (SAP DMe) is the central control module within SAP Digital Manufacturing.

It enables the digital management and monitoring of manufacturing processes in real time. By directly connecting machines and production lines, companies can optimise their production processes and record production data consistently.

The software evaluates data from production in real time and enables detailed visualisation of relevant key performance indicators (KPIs).

This is achieved through the intelligent distribution of production orders, taking into account current capacities, employee qualifications and machine statuses.
