The growing complexity of heterogeneous ERP system landscapes often impedes efficient value creation and blocks resources needed for innovation.
02
Rising costs, inefficient processes
Increasing logistics and production costs strain budgets, hindering investments. In this context, the demand for more efficient and automated processes is growing.
03
Companies are stuck in an innovation bottleneck
Distributed and complex system landscapes require intensive maintenance, leaving little time for IT advancements.
04
Digital transformation must pay off!
Digital transformation and new business models put pressure on companies to modernize outdated ERP systems. But how do you ensure that the investment pays off in the long run?
SAP Implementation: Setting up the SAP ERP system from scratch with Greenfield
SAP Implementation: Setting up the SAP ERP system from scratch with Greenfield
If you want to harness the full potential of SAP S/4HANA and implement a lean, modern IT landscape, one approach stands out: a new implementation of SAP S/4HANA.
This new implementation is also known as the Greenfield approach. SAP Greenfield means starting 'from scratch.' The system is set up entirely anew.
This gives companies the unique opportunity to make the switch from a grown and often heterogeneous IT landscape to a lean, harmonized, uniform and standardized or even highly flexible ERP system in the cloud.

If you are already using an SAP ERP system, you primarily have two options for moving to SAP S/4HANA: The New Implementation ("Greenfield") or the System Conversion ("Brownfield").
Other approaches (like "Selective Data Transition") are generally based on System Conversion but include selective data migration. For new SAP customers without an ERP system, the Greenfield approach is the only way to implement SAP S/4HANA.
Brownfield means that SAP experts upgrade the existing SAP ERP system to SAP S/4HANA in one step. Processes, programs, and data are carried over, but this also includes old code, outdated data, and functions that either have no successor in SAP S/4HANA or are discontinued by SAP by the end of 2027.
With the Greenfield approach, a company makes a clean break from its old ERP system and moves to SAP S/4HANA. This creates the foundation for a future-proof IT architecture and allows pain points to be resolved during the new implementation.
In the Greenfield approach, the software is implemented along SAP Best Practice processes, staying close to the standard. Master data from the existing systems is transferred, with cleansing and harmonization if necessary.
SAP Best Practices are pre-configured and immediately available business processes that meet the core requirements of companies.
Evolved ERP landscapes typically have an ERP core with numerous custom developments (so-called "Z-developments"), meaning proprietary adaptations and solutions that have been developed over many years. Additionally, there are various surrounding systems connected to this conglomerate of functions and components via traditional interface technology.
This setup was long the state of the art and still has advantages:
First and foremost is the independence from third parties, as requirements can be implemented autonomously.
There is also the ability to adapt almost any development and solution to individual needs.
However, from today’s perspective, the disadvantages outweigh the benefits, as the traditional ERP structure has become outdated and is now slowing down companies in their further development.
A historically grown, conventional ERP system is usually highly complex and heterogeneous due to its evolution over time. It is difficult to maintain, cumbersome to upgrade, and challenging to keep up to date. Many developments are heavily interdependent, which reduces the responsiveness of IT. Serious knowledge issues can arise if employees with expert knowledge are no longer available.
Anyone now planning to implement SAP S/4HANA should therefore carefully consider whether to carry over the software from the old ERP world—such as through a system conversion—directly into the new world of SAP S/4HANA. This is especially important because a system conversion prevents access to best practices. As a result, a later switch to a cloud solution becomes significantly more complex and resource-intensive.
In most cases, the best approach to replacing SAP ERP is likely a greenfield migration. There are two main reasons for this: companies gain a modern IT architecture and benefit from best practices. With a greenfield approach, they move to an ERP system that—thanks to the flexible handling of interfaces via apps and the new architectural principles—remains clean in the long run and avoids future issues with updates and upgrades. Companies are setting the course toward the future and the cloud.
SAP S/4HANA represents a strategic opportunity to realign the entire business model—whether through cloud adoption, new analytics capabilities, more easily scalable processes, or the use of artificial intelligence.
A modern IT architecture with SAP S/4HANA stays close to the SAP standard and thus aligned with best practices, is significantly less complex despite new functionalities, and its applications are either partially or entirely in the cloud—or hosted on dedicated platforms, depending on requirements. It can be individually and release-safely extended using modern frameworks, and is above all interconnected through real-time interfaces.
The centerpiece of such an architecture is the “Clean Core” of SAP S/4HANA. This core is based on the HANA database and comes preconfigured as a standard through scope items. These scope items are the individually activatable units of best practices. All core business functions are already included in the system by default. After a new implementation, additional, separate software components can be integrated into SAP S/4HANA via modern API interfaces, connecting seamlessly to the core.
Various software components can be connected to the core: SAP-approved extensions (via the Extensibility Framework), business cloud apps (from SAP or third parties), non-SAP systems, and in-house applications. Communication between these applications takes place via API protocols, which have evolved from web technologies into a de facto standard for development in general. SAP includes these protocols as standard docking points for connecting apps.
In combination with the SAP HANA in-memory database, they link all data in real time. This enables companies to access up-to-date and fully harmonized financial figures or customer data at any time, at the push of a button — a clear competitive advantage over companies that have yet to move into this new environment.
The advantages of an IT architecture based on best-practice standards include: no limitations in processes and functionalities, high adaptability to new developments, lower operating costs, greater independence from third parties, maximum flexibility in choosing the operating model, and strong investment protection through continuous product updates. Innovations can be adopted more quickly, as they build on the standard.

Your company and the SAP S/4HANA Cloud
A modern architecture is best implemented in the cloud.
The SAP S/4HANA Cloud is the key to greater flexibility, reduced complexity, increased adaptability of functions, and lower costs.
Two main SAP cloud solutions are available for implementation:
SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition (PCE)
SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition
The SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition – a customizable private cloud solution combining the benefits of an on-premise solution with those of the cloud – is currently the preferred choice for many companies.
The path to the Private Cloud at SAP is via RISE with SAP (RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition). This offering bundles numerous tools and solutions to facilitate and accelerate the implementation.
The fastest route to the cloud is the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition, a modern and flexible SaaS public cloud solution. For companies seeking maximum standardization, this option is the best path – available via RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP for new mid-sized customers.
A financial service provider uses SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud...
...to adapt to constantly changing legal requirements.
The cloud solution offers regular updates and ensures the company remains fully compliant with the latest regulations.
